Recovery from a spinal cord injury is more than a physical journey—it’s an emotional and psychological transformation. At Saksham Ek Abhiyaan, our Mission Peer Counselling initiative provides critical support to individuals adapting to life after injury.
Our peer counsellors, many of whom are spinal injury survivors themselves, offer more than advice—they offer lived empathy. Whether it’s learning to navigate a wheelchair, regaining emotional strength, or answering tough questions about the future, these sessions often become the turning point in a beneficiary’s life.
Through partnerships with hospitals like Safdarjung and at our Delhi centre, our trained peer support team provides vital counselling to both patients and their families. Adjusting to life post-injury can bring overwhelming questions:
- How will I move around?
- Can I still work?
- What will my relationships look like?
Our mentors answer these questions with honesty and hope, drawing from their own experiences. This connection makes a profound impact—beneficiaries receiving peer counselling show greater commitment to rehabilitation, maintain a more positive outlook, and reintegrate into society more successfully.
Importantly, our peer support also extends to families and caregivers. We offer workshops that help them understand the emotional impact of spinal cord injuries, promoting mental well-being across the support system.
Many of our counsellors form lifelong bonds with those they help, creating a strong and supportive Saksham community rooted in resilience, hope, and shared strength.
At Saksham, we believe disability is not inability. With the right emotional support, every individual can live a life of dignity, purpose, and joy.
